Protective gear fit
Quick answer: Protective pieces should cover the joint they are named for and stay put in a hockey stance. Age is a hint. Tape measure first.
Helmet
Measure head circumference. The helmet should not rock. Do not buy a bigger shell “for growth” if it slides. We do not claim any helmet prevents concussion.
Shoulders
Chest under the arms. Caps on the points of the shoulders. Bicep pads should not crash into elbow pads.
Elbows
Cap on the elbow. If they slide, check strap sequence before jumping a size.
Gloves
Fingertips near the end, wrist still flexes. 13" is a length, not a brand-identical last.
Pants vs girdle
Pants are a one-piece shell. A girdle is the padded short; it usually needs a shell. A shell alone is not protection.
Shins
Kneecap to top of skate tongue. 8" youth is not a senior 14".
Neck
If the league requires one, fit the neck circumference the manufacturer lists. We do not call any guard cut-proof unless a certification says that exact thing.
