Quick answer: Used sticks, bags, and some pads can be fine if they fit and are intact. Be conservative with helmets and anything with unknown impact history or cracked plastic.
Inspect
Cracks in caps, compressed foam that does not rebound, missing straps, rusted rivets, delaminated skate holders, skate steel below useful height.
Helmets
A used helmet that fits is not automatically “safe.” We will not tell you a helmet prevents brain injury. If the foam is packed out, the shell is cracked, or the history is unknown and you are uneasy, buy new.
Fit still wins
A free Senior shoulder pad that swallows a 7-year-old is not a deal.
