Quick answer: Overlap on a chart is common. Do not automatically size up. Use the measurement the manufacturer actually uses, then check how current gear feels.
Skates
If length is right and the sides crush, that is usually volume/width — not a longer size.
Protective
Shoulder Medium and Large can both list 40" chest. Pick the one that seats the cap on the point of the shoulder without blocking elbow pads.
Sticks
A 65 and a 70 can both be reasonable. Current flex that loads well beats weight ÷ 2.
